In Achebe's poem, "Nigeria's Promise, Africa's Hope," the thesis is very complex yet simple all at the same time.
Thesis Statement: "In order to fully understand Africa has a continent, we must first understand the complexity of the African people."
Thesis Statement: "In order to fully understand Africa has a continent, we must first understand the complexity of the African people."
- Evidence 1: Achebe wrote, "In Nigeria, in the years before we finally gained independence in 1960, we had no doubt about where we were going: we were going to inherit freedom; that was all that mattered." The people in Africa were so focused on getting their independence that when they finally got it, they had no clue what to do with it. This quote is showing how we must understand how the Africans adapted to life in order to understand them.
- Evidence 2: "It had been a very bitter experience that led to the hostilities in the first place." Many problems arose in Africa since they had no prior experience of being on their own. Some of their problems have been overcome because of their motivation and dedication.
- Evidence 3: " This is how I see the chaos in Africa today and the absence of logic in what we're doing." Achebe is saying that Africa was in total chaos because they did not what to do. We do not understand their struggles because we have not lived through them ourselves.
