I chose to do global warming because it is a serious issue but it's not taken as seriously as it should be. My opinion on the issue is that global warming is mostly man-made but at the same time natural causes do contribute even though humans have the greatest effect. The satirical argument is that global warming is not so bad because of all the positives it has which aren't necessarily true. Young adults wouldn't truly understand or care about this matter as much as an adult would. I chose to do a newspaper article because you would usually find an older crowd reading a newspaper rather than watching videos or listening to music. My response satirizes global warming by giving it that humorous effect to make people laugh even though it is a serious problem. I used a hyperbole by saying " We're Burning Up!!" in the title and I used irony all throughout the article. I also used a pun by calling global warming a blessing rather than a burden.
We all know that global warming is a serious problem in our society today. Even though that is a true fact we citizens still debate on whether the cause is natural or because of humans. Some people believe that compared to the size of the earth, human activity is “pathetically small” (Bronte). The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states, “Human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation cause significant changes in the climate” (Mann). .” It clearly states global warming is a natural cause caused by changes in the sun’s heat. Many people believe that global warming has happened way before humans existed. Others believe that humans are the cause because of all the carbon dioxide they put into the atmosphere by driving and using up electricity. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists argues, “Human-generated greenhouse gas emissions are too small to substantially change the earth’s climate.” According to the EDF, “Scientists are more confident than ever that humans are responsible for global warming” (Ocko). Humans just take what they believe is theirs and find ways to destroy it. One example given is that we continue to throw garbage everywhere and allow bad things into the air. Humans say if carbon dioxide is the cause of global warming than why don’t we all stop breathing. There is a group of people who haven't chosen a side and simply think global warming is caused by both humans and nature. One of the natural causes includes methane gas and the other is that the earth goes through a cycle of climate change that lasts thousands of years. Although they believe both causes have their effects, man-made causes are the most destructive. Pollution being the biggest problem. Another human cause is the population. More people equals more food and more transportation that leads to burning fossil fuels and agriculture.
In this paragraph, Lemony Snicket uses dashes to create a break in the story. He uses this break to describe the meaning of the word "nefarious" in the context in which he uses it. At the end of the passage Snicket uses a colon in the very last sentence and laces the words "very nearby" in italics. The sentence structure of the last sentence helps create more suspense to keep the reader alert and interested. Most of Snicket's sentences are not short and choppy, they are long and full of detail. Also, he never uses conjunctions in his writing. The syntax that Lemony Snicket uses makes the text easier to understand by giving definitions to more advanced words. For example, "-the word "nefarious" here means Baudelaire- hating" (109). Even though that isn't the real definition that is an acceptable way to define it in text. It makes the the story more interesting because it holds the reader's attention with suspense and keeps the story very detailed.
